Shark show: Disoriented blue shark causes beach evacuation

Beachgoers at a popular tourist spot in Majorca, Spain have a close encounter with a disoriented blue shark swam up close to the coast, causing massive evacuations.

Sun worshippers at a popular tourist beach in Mallorca were forced to flee from the water on Thursday, after a shark tried to join in on the fun.

Video made by lifeguards on the beach of Cala Domingos shows the shark — later determined to be a 10-foot blue shark swimming in the direction of the coast if in a panic, spectators gather and watch from the rocks. The police evacuated the water around 3 hours, Sky News reports.

The shark seemed to be disoriented, according to Palma Aquarium Recovery Center, which eventually was called in to retrieve the fish.

Guillem Felix, a vet nurse for the Recovery Center, said they were first notified of the shark at 3:30 p.m., but decided to wait and see if it would return to the ocean.

“We have a second call an hour later to say it had finally writhing on the sand and the lifeguards had put it back in the water, but had then returned to the coast,” Felix said to The Telegraph.

The shark was euthanized shortly thereafter, the Diario de Mallorca reported.

An autopsy later revealed that the shark was injured by a stingray, with one of the barbs still stuck in his snout. The resulting damage to the nerves made it difficult for the animal to hunt and search for food, so they disoriented, and eventually swim to the coast.
