TEMPE, Arizona. – Authorities investigating a deadly self-driving car accident in a suburb of Phoenix have released video of the Uber SUV striking pedestrians as they walked with her bike through a dark street.
The video released Wednesday by the Tempe police department shows 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg that the walk on the roadway from a dark place and stopping the moment before she was struck.
The SUV’s lights do not illuminate the woman to a second or two before impact, raising questions about whether the car would have stopped in time.
The footage also shows the backup driver in the SUV down for a few seconds before the crash. The driver looked up and seemed startled at the last moment of the clip.
The crash Sunday night in Tempe was the first death, in which a fully autonomous testing of the vehicle.
