Police officer shot in Davis, California, are reportedly in serious condition; suspect at large, police say

A police officer with the city of Davis, Calif., was in serious condition late Thursday after she was shot while responding to a triple-car accident, authorities say. The suspect is being sought.

A California police officer was in serious condition late Thursday after being shot while responding to a traffic accident, and a manhunt was underway for the suspect, authorities said.

The female official, who was not identified, arrived on the scene of a three-car accident around 7 am local time, when the shots were fired, the Davis Police Department said. The officer had serious injuries and was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center, department spokesman Paul Doroshov said during an evening press conference.

The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s with an average build, FOX40 Sacramento reported. He was reportedly wearing a baseball hat, black jacket, blue or brown jeans and black tactical boots.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect was involved in the crash or the officer had returned fire. Further details could not be carried out if the investigation remained.

The police earlier issued a “shelter in place” and asked residents to stay away from the downtown Davis area was searched for the suspect, FOX40 reported.

State, local and federal law enforcement agencies from across the region have responded, the Sacramento Bee reported. The police shut down intersections and combed the area for the suspect.

Davis is located approximately 15 miles west of Sacramento.
