Police: Man locked up disabled child in hot car to punish mother

COLUMBUS, Miss. – A Mississippi man has been arrested on a felony child abuse charge after police say he deliberately locked with a handicapped child in a hot car to punish the mother of the girl.

Thirty-year-old Brandon Windham was last Thursday arrested after witnesses said he walked away from a car with a girl inside. The Clarion-Ledger reports that the heat index of 90 degrees at the time.

The child is between 6 and 10, is disabled and was unable to free herself. She was stuck for 10 to 20 minutes for the officers who saved her.

Assistant Columbus police chief Fred Shelton says Windham had an altercation with the mother of the child earlier in the day and locked the child in the car to punish her. It is unclear whether the Tree has a lawyer.
