Police: Driver runs out of gas after stealing the patrol car

TULARE, S. D. – A driver who called for help after running out of gas is accused of stealing a deputy’s squad car in South Dakota and the leading authorities in a chase for a lack of fuel.

Troy James has been charged with felony grand theft in Spink County. Officials say that James called Monday for about 4 hours on Highway 281 in the vicinity of Tulare, say his car was stopped and he apparently ran out of fuel.

Sheriff Kevin Schurch tells the American Aberdeen News responding deputy tried to keep James because he behaves bizarrely and James pushed the officer out of the squad and took off. Schurch says James was apparently armed.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol and officials from the other provinces joined in the pursuit of James, who was finally caught at about 140 km distance.
