CHARLESTON, W. Va. – A police chase that ended in a volley of gunfire has left a West Virginia man is dead.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that Kanawha Metro 911 dispatchers said Dunbar police began a pursuit of a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old Rodney Toler on Thursday.
They say the vehicle crossed the Dunbar toll bridge in South Charleston, leading Dunbar, and South Charleston, officers east by the town in Charleston.
Charleston police spokeswoman Lt. Autumn Davis says Toler crashed the vehicle into a semi-truck and started shooting at the police. South Charleston police returned fire, striking him.
Davis says that they do not know how many times Toler was hit, or he had gotten out of the car when the shooting started.
Toler was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured.
