Plea for the mercy of the victim, the widow of spare parts, woman in prison

DUDLEY, Mass. – A Massachusetts woman charged with striking and killing a man with her car as he checked his mailbox has avoided jail thanks to a plea for the mercy of the victim, the widow.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that 62-year-old Sharon Ricci, originally facing a motor vehicle homicide charge in November 2016, the death of the 68-year-old William Krukowski in Charlton. If convicted, Ricci faced time behind bars.

Prosecutors say Krukowski’s widow, Margaret, asked that the engine of the vehicle manslaughter charges are dropped because the sending Ricci to the prison would be a burden for her family.

Instead, Ricci pleaded guilty to careless driving and was Thursday sentenced to three years conditionally.

Ricci was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, mechanical failure, weather conditions, speed and medical problems were ruled out as factors in the crash.
