Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, resigned on Tuesday amid allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination within the department, the mayor’s office announced.

“New allegations of sexual harassment and gender and racial discrimination among the rank and file that have recently been brought to my attention,” the Mayor, Jim Kenney, said in a statement. “While these are allegations, not allegations, Commissioner Ross on bullying, I’ve finally believes his resignation is in the best interest of the Department.”

Kenney cited the new sexual harassment prevention, policies, and internal reforms within the department in which he had a feeling Ross is not pro-actively help to implement it.

“The roll-out of a new set of policies is understandable that it takes time, I don’t think the Police took the necessary actions to address the underlying cultural issues that often have a negative impact on women, particularly women of color,” Kenney said.

The Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) will not immediately have a comment.

Ross, who has been commissioner since January of 2016, and has served in a number of divisions, including patrol, special operations, the detective bureau, homicide, and internal affairs for almost 30 years, will be replaced in the interim by the PPD Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter.

“It seems to me that the new management will help us to provide for the reform of the Department, and to show that racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination, simply will not tolerate it,” Kenney said.

Kenney said he was “disappointed” by Ross’ resignation, but he has been a great asset to the Police Department and the City as a whole”, but believed it was ” in the best interest of the Department.”

Ross’ departure came just a week after an hourslong shootout between police and an armed gunman, which resulted in six officers have been shot.

Kenney, he said to Ross as if the best commissioner in the united states after the officers from the PPD, as well as several other law enforcement agencies were able to successfully negotiate with the suspected gunman to peaceful surrender.
