Perquin chosen as the new Poet laureate
Ester Naomi Perquin is the next two-year Poet laureate. The 37-year-old Rotterdam follows Anne Vegter.
That makes the NRC Friday known. Perquin says that she was impressed by her election. “It was never in my mind that I could be such a thing aspire.”
Perquin, who in 2007 made his debut as a poet, was chosen by a committee of writers and poëziekenners. Who praised her as a “prolific and versatile poet with a generous and personal look at the world and reality”.
The new Poet laureate is going to poems about the news writing but also plan to put poetry in the public space. She also wanted to bridge the gap between poetry for adults and those for children.
The Poet laureate is an initiative of NRC, Poetry international, the Royal Library and the Poëzieclub. Gerrit Komrij was the first Poet laureate in 2000. Followed by Driek van wissen, Ramsey Nasr and Anne Vegter.
Perquin was previously a columnist of The Groene Amsterdammer and NRC handelsblad and is the host of the radio program Never sleep.
