PHILADELPHIA – Lawyers for the nearly two dozen priests whose names were withheld from a stunning grand jury report on sexual abuse of children in six of the Pennsylvania Catholic dioceses say that their names must remain redacted.
The lawyers told the state Supreme Court on Wednesday that there is no way to indicate that priests fair trial now that the grand jury has concluded. The redacted report released in August detailed allegations of abuse against more than 300 priests.
The Supreme court scheduled the arguments to determine if there was a cure for those priests who had not been given a sufficient opportunity to appear before the grand jury. The attorney general’s office, said he could convene a second grand jury to specifically consider the allegations against these priests or met again the previous grand jury to the court’s discretion.
