Penn & Teller postpone shows so Counter can undergo back surgery

Penn & Teller say they plan to resume performing in August.

The comedy and magic team Penn & Teller, announced this week that they are postponing the performance until Aug. 18 so that Counter (the short, silent one) can undergo back surgery.

The duo had already planned to take a break from the care of the Counter is the problem, but abruptly called off a show scheduled for Friday night in Biloxi, Miss., because the Counter was in too much pain after a Wednesday performance, the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Counter is problems again shows “the lingering result of hanging from straitjackets and climbing in and out of boxes for more than 40 years,” the report said. He will undergo surgery Monday in Las Vegas, the report added.

“Counter is getting his back all the way down a little earlier than expected,” tweeted Penn Jillette (the large, loud). “So, P&T are on hiatus from everything until 18 August and the boys (and bad!”

“My sincere apologies to our fans in Biloxi and people who were planning on seeing the Vegas show,” Counter tweeted Thursday. “Last night, during the show, my back firmly ordered me to cut the crap and get it fixed. So I am stopping work as of today until August 18 and to my back surgery, pronto. Love -T.

“In our entire prior career,” Counter added, “I think we have had four shows in the short term. So I (and many of our crew) feel disoriented and confused, as if we were in one of those showbiz nightmares where you can’t find your way back to the stage in time for the next cue.”

Penn Jillette, 63, and Teller (Raymond Joseph Teller), 70, are together for more than 40 years.
