Penn State frat member gets a trial period of a lien death case

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – A former Penn State fraternity member will serve a year of probation for hazing and furnishing alcohol to minors for the events surrounding the death of a building almost two years ago.

The Centre Daily Times said the 22-year-old Joseph Ems, Jr. was also sentenced to a community service and a fine Thursday after apologizing and himself, “a young boy who is making poor decisions.”

The Philadelphia man is under approximately two dozen members of the now-closed-Beta Theta Pi to the face of the costs that resulted from the investigation into the death of 19-year-old Tim Piazza, of Lebanon, New Jersey.

Researchers say Piazza consumed a dangerous amount of alcohol and suffered serious head and abdominal injuries in the night of a pledge bid acceptance ceremony.

Ems’ charges relate to the giving of pink lemonade vodka on a property.
