Democrats condemn border detention-policy
The legislators fan out across the country to hammer President Trump ‘ s zero-tolerance immigration policy; William La Jeunesse reports from San Diego.
Congressional lawmakers met with men, women and children detained at the international border in several immigration detention centres, where the Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called the President Trump the “zero-tolerance” immigration policy “a complete joke, demeans America’s values and our heritage as a beacon of hope, opportunity and freedom.”
“Stop this inhuman, barbarous policy, to withdraw their actions, take responsibility for it,” Pelosi said in San Diego, according to KABC. “It’s not about immigration. This is about humanity. It’s all about family. It’s about who we are as a country.”
Pelosi said Republicans have a moral and legal responsibility to the end of the new guidelines, the separation of the children of migrant workers, by their parents after entering the United States from Mexico.
“The blame for every abused child, with a broken heart, a mother and a father and broken family, is located directly on the President, and only he can end the trauma,” said Pelosi, who was joined on the podium with Rep. Juan Vargas, D-Calif., and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
In the midst of international outcry, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said on Monday that the growing crisis at the US-Mexico border is “new.”
“We are not going to make apologies for the work we do, or for the work of the law enforcement authorities for the work to do that the American people expect of us,” Nielsen of the National Sheriffs’ Association, said in a speech in New Orleans. “Illegal actions must have consequences. No more free passes, no more get out of jail free cards.”
The separation of the children of immigrants, drawn by their parents to the limit a flood of criticism, the introduced orientation of the policy, in the last month by attorney General Jeff Sessions. The policy says that every adult, of the entry of the United States is illegal, will be prosecuted.
US Protocol does not allow that their children not be detained with their parents, because they accused other than their mothers and fathers, of a crime.
