China is the world’s Orwellian video surveillance gets a bad rap, but the US is not far behind, says a new report.

While China is still one of the most heavily-surveilled country, with 1 camera to be installed for every 4.1 persons by 2018, the united states of america was a close second, with a ” people-to-camera ratio is 4.6-to-1, according to the report, in that respect it has in the past few years, through to 2018.

“Over the past few years, the coverage of the monitoring of the market and has a strong focus on China’s massive deployment of cameras, and the use of artificial intelligence in the technology,” Oliver Philippou, an IHS Markit analyst, said in a statement.
“The US is almost on a par with China in terms of the camera’s penetration in the future debate on mass surveillance, it is likely to be a concern for America as much as China,” Philippou added.

In both China and the United States have seen a steep increase in installations over the past few years, IHS Markit said. China’s installed base of surveillance cameras, it shot up to close to 70 per cent in the past few years, to 349 million euros in 2018, with an increase to 210 million by 2015.
The US-installed, also saw a significant increase, rising to over 70 million video cameras in 2018, an increase from 47 million in 2015, according to market researcher.
By 2021, China’s installed base is expected to hit 567 million for the cameras, while the united states is projected to rise to 85 million euros.
