Opposition Suriname argues again against Bouterse
Several thousand supporters of the five opposition in the Surinamese parliament on Saturday to protest against president Desi Bouterse. The political leaders have Bouterse called on to act as his ‘mismanagement’ does not change.
The event took place on the grounds of the partijcentrum of one of the parties. The organization was forced the action there to organize because the authorities twice refused a licence to give to the action in the centre of Paramaribo.
Suriname is already almost two years into a severe economic crisis. By the sky-high inflation, more and more people are no longer around with their salary. The financial problems are among others caused by low prices of gold and oil, Suriname’s main export products. But also to poor financial management and corruption by the government to the miserable position contributed.
Chandripersad Santokhi, the leader of the largest opposition party, VHP, called Bouterse on the poverty, corruption and problems in the healthcare system to address. “But if you can’t, please give the mandate back. Give the country back to the people,” said Santokhi.
Also, Ronnie Brunswijk, former leader of the Junglecommando and bodyguard of Bouterse, spoke to the crowd. He is now leader of the General Liberation and interior development party or abop (ABOP). According to him, has Bouterse promises much done, but he is not fulfilled. Therefore, he should now his mandate to give back, find Brunswick.
The turnout was lower than the organisers had expected. They had expected 15,000 to 20,000 people.
