LA PORTE, Texas – Texas Army National Guard officials say two members of the crew of an Apache helicopter on a routine training mission died when their plane crashed in Galveston Bay close to the coastline approximately 25 miles southeast of Houston.
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Glen Webb says the names of the victims are being withheld until their relatives are informed.
The helicopter was based at the nearby Ellington Field.
Witnesses said the plane broke loose in the sky late in the afternoon.
Debris and a small oil spill on the bay. A piece of the chopper’s knife was found on land near the crash site.
Divers were working in the night to retrieve the victims. The wheels of the helicopter crossed above the water surface of approximately 25 metres from the shore in the vicinity of an abandoned cruise ship terminal.
