ST. PAUL, Minn. The right of supervision on the process of a Minnesota police officer who fatally shot a black motorist is expected to decide whether jurors get to hear statements about the man’s pistol permit.
St. Anthony officer Jeronimo Yanez is on trial for manslaughter. Prosecutors say Yanez, who is Hispanic, shot 32-year-old Philando Castile July during a traffic stop after Castile said he had a gun.
The authorities later found that Castile had a gun licence. Castile’s girlfriend spoke about the permit during the recording, the recording of the aftermath and streaming it live on Facebook.
Lawyers from the defense wants statements omitted, saying Yanez did not know about the licence, so it is irrelevant.
The court decides after the prosecutors say more about the matter Wednesday.
Potential jurors return to court Wednesday, where they will be questioned individually.
