Wout van Aert feels already at home with Team Jumbo Visma. The Belgian world champion cyclo-cross hopes the successor of the Lotto-Jumbo a turbulent last half year finally behind them.
“It had quite a lot of feet in the earth. It was a relief when it was round,” said Van Aert Friday at the presentation of the cycling and schaatstak of Jumbo-Visma in Veghel.
The 24-year-old native of Herentals delivered in september, his contract with Veranda’s Willems-Crelan in because that team without his knowledge merged with Roompot.
Of Aert undertook earlier this week to team Lotto-Jumbo and travelled immediately to Spain in order to join the traningskamp of his new employer.
“It felt like my first day of school. I’m amazed at how the team works, how they with all possible details. I am 100 percent sure that I can be better”, he said.
Van Aert was up to 1 march, as a cyclo cross rider active. He aims then a number of spring classics, which he last year for the first time proefen and that is not without merit did.
Van Aert will often Poppel encounter
Van Aert will, once active on the road, often Danny van Poppel encounter. The 25-year-old son of former top sprinter Jean-Paul van Poppel will focus on the classic work.
“Sprinting was to me always, but the classics certainly. With Wout, we have a strong rider for the spring classics. I focus now to get in on those games to be good”, said Van Poppel, who last year happened to Team Sky and his promise as a sprinter not inloste.
“In pure running speed is Danny short when the plane is. Additionally we have discovered that he was the right profile for a classic rider”, declared Nico Verhoeven, one of the team managers of Jumbo-Visma.
Van Aert will be happy if Van Poppel is in the classics. In the past year, with its debut in races like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, however, he was mostly a loner.
“I could see how much value it has if you with a lot of guys in the final. We must do this team good for the day may come,” he decided.
