A police sergeant was arrested on a murder charge in the shooting of a 66-year-old mentally ill woman in New York City.
The police said on Wednesday that Sgt. Hugh Barry was arrested Deborah Danner October in the death. A spokesman for Barry’s union did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The police respond to a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed person as Barry found Danner in her Bronx apartment.
Authorities say at the time that Danner was a threat to the sergeant with a bat when he shot her.
The commissioner of police and the mayor have condemned the shooting. They say Barry had a stun gun, but it did not.
Barry has been suspended while the criminal case plays.
