NYPD officer acquitted of the murder of mentally ill woman as unions slam fees

A NYPD officer was acquitted by a judge Thursday after being charged in the death of a mentally ill woman in her apartment in New York.

Sgt. Hugh Barry of the New York Police Department, was acquitted of murder, manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide in October 2016, the death of Deborah Danner.

Officers were called to Danner the Bronx apartment on 17 October 2016, something that happened a couple of times. Barry testified that he had felt threatened by Danner, who had used a pair of scissors and a bat to thwart the police.

He drew his gun and begged her to drop the bat. When she stepped forward, Barry fired his weapon.

“I just see the bat swinging, and when I fired,” he said. “I’m looking at these bats that crack me in the head and kill me.”

The prosecutors said Danner’s death is the result of numerous failures by the eight-year department veteran.

Despite the cheers for Barry’s acquittal, the city’s police unions blasted Mayor Bill de Blasio and nypd commissioner James O’neill for allowing him to be loaded with a top murder count.

Sgt. Ed Mullins, head the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said that Barry “was wronged, and it is now up to the commissioner to make up for it,” the Daily News reported.

“What I saw was the commissioner of police playing politics,” he went on to say. “I saw a mayor playing politics and a public prosecutor play in politics. He owes him an apology. The mayor owes him an apology. And so does the prosecutor.”

The Sergeants Benevolent Association posted a photo of the three men with the caption “Three Blind Mice. See how… ‘not’!”
