Nvidia has to work with Arm chips, and so on, deeper push into supercomputing

(Reuters) – Nvidia Corp. on Monday said it is creating the potato chips to work with processors from Arm Holdings, Inc. on the construction of computers, development of Nvidia’s push into the systems that will be used for the modeling of both the climate predictions and for nuclear weapons.

Nvidia was for a long period of time-known as a supplier of graphics chips for computers, video games, and to make it look more realistic, but the researchers will use the chips in data centers to speed up the artificial intelligence in computing, such as the education and training of computers to recognize images.

In order to do this, and Nvidia’s so-called accelerator chips work in conjunction with the central processors available from companies such as Intel Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. (a).

At a supercomputing conference in Germany on Monday, Nvidia said, to the accelerator chips are working with Arm-based processors by the end of the year.

Arm, owned by the japanese SoftBank Group, Corp., provides the underlying processor technology of the chips used in most mobile phones. However, companies such as the Current Computing systems, under the direction of Intel’s former president, for his work on which chips in the data center, where Intel’s chips dominate.

However, Arm processors are different from Intel or IBM chips, and that the Arm is not himself, and chips. Instead, it licenses the underlying technology, so that others will be able to make chips with it.

Ian Buck, vice president of Nvidia’s accelerated computing unit, said the project is for the construction of a super-computer using the Arm as a “heavy-lift” from a technical perspective.

But, he said, is that Nvidia made because the researchers in Europe and Japan to develop super-computing chips with Arm technology, you are essentially giving them a third option, then the IBM and Intel, they can have more control.

“This kind of openness makes it very attractive,” He said, arms technology, in an interview with reuters before the presentation. “What makes the Arm very interesting and that is why we are pleased to announce the support of, is the ability to create an open architecture for supercomputing.”

Making the move to work with the Poor on the computers to follow Nvidia’s $6.8-billion deal to buy the Israeli company, Mellanox Technologies. Mellanox makes high-speed networking chips, which are helping to stitch together lots of smaller computers into a larger one and can be found in some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.
