Number of severe psychiatric patients in the Netherlands increased by 5,000
The number of patients with a severe psychiatric disorder in the Netherlands is in a year’s time, with five thousand rose to more than 220,000.
The cost of healthcare for this group in total amounts to 4.7 billion euros per year. That’s an average of 21,000 euros per patient, shows an analysis of zorginformatiecentrum Vektis.
The researchers looked at how many people such a condition have on the municipality, the characteristics and healthcare costs of these patients. The used data come from the information systems of Vektis, for which health insurers every month, files delivery.
Of a serious psychiatric disorder is defined as people a long time to suffer from such a complicated disorder, enabling them to get in trouble with, for example, work, relationships and finances.
They need intensive and prolonged treatment. Possible camps they with, for example, schizophrenia, depression, or serious persoonlijkheidsproblemen.
