A 62-year-old Australian passenger who was on board the Norwegian Jewel’s “jump in” with all my heart, Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement.
The incident, which took place on Sunday morning in the vicinity of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, was captured by closed-circuit security cameras and observed by a witness, the cruise line said.

“As confirmed by our SPY cameras, and statements from witnesses at the Nov. 29, 2019, a 62-year-old Australian male guest will deliberately jump overboard as the ship was sailing from Napier, New Zealand,” a spokesman for the cruise line confirmed to Fox News.
“The government will be notified, and a search-and-rescue operation was immediate. Unfortunately, the guest cannot be found. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family at this difficult time.”

The local search-and-rescue operations were put on hold early in the afternoon on Monday, according to Maritime New Zealand, a government agency which is to oversee the co-ordination of the implementation of the maritime areas.

The agency, however, said the search could resume if there is additional information available.”

The Norwegian Jewel is currently on a round-trip sailing from New Zealand to Sydney, Australia. The cruise, which departed on Dec. 22, and is due to return to Sydney on Jan. 3.
