The recent death of actress Carrie Fisher will not get a digital ‘double’ in the prosecution of the Star Wars saga. That has Lucasfilm, the producer of the sf series, have been reported.
Princess or general Leia Organa will either get out of the story disappear, either by a different actress be played. By that decision, Lucasfilm is Episode VIII the final swan song of the Fisher. The pictures for which print at the end of July ended, and the movie comes somewhere at the end of this year in the halls. Episode IX is scheduled for 2019; that film is still in the stage of the elaboration of the script, so all Leia-possibilities is still open.
In “Rogue One”, the youngest Star Wars vehicle, was, however, a digital technique used to the British actor Peter Cushing to play. The husband died in 1994. Cushing played in the first Star Wars movie (Episode IV), the character Grand Moff Tarkin, in addition to, among others, a young Carrie Fisher.
The use of digital actors has its advantages and disadvantages. The replacement of star-actors, is the solution financially interesting. But, as Steve Martin already knew: dead (wo)men don’t win oscars.
