Nikki Reed and her husband Ian Somerhalder are mourning the loss of their beloved furry friend, Ira.

Reed took to Instagram on Tuesday to reveal that the couple’s dog had died and to share an emotional tribute to their late canine companion.

“My dear Ira girl. So many memories, so many adventures with you at my side. You’ve been my best friend for so long, and so I sit here and write this letter to you, I still don’t know if I’m able to say goodbye,” the 30-year-old actress wrote alongside a gloomy snapshot of himself and the beautiful German shepherd.

“You are the definition of unconditional love of my beautiful girl. You taught me so much about so many…in many ways, our biggest teacher,” she continued. “You’re here for every chapter, as my rock, my favorite cuddle buddy and my best girl.”

At 12:11 PM PST this beautiful girl took her last breath. Quiet cancer had filled this great girl from me, and there was nothing we could do. I’ve never known a more magnificent animals. A soul, who spoke 1,000 languages. Boy, I will miss you and everyone who ever know you will miss you. Numerous flights, 100nights in the airstream, the drive across the country, jumping in any lake – river – stream, and the ocean was there just for a splash and be happy. Thank you that you loved me as I had never known. I know that you are here, your energy is here with us-I saw you play with Neech this morning. I love you kiddo. Love, Father

The upright post is shared with a slideshow of sweet snapshots of the Ira in the course of the years, as the precious pooch was with Reed on the back of a boat, traipsed through the freshly fallen snow, went camping with the couple and generally brought joy in their lives.

“Each chapter of my life feels like it wouldn’t have been as special without you and now I don’t know how to let you go,” she continued. “I miss that crazy toothy grin, and watching you stretch your head up to the sky after each nap. I miss those sensitive eyes, that looked so deep in my soul I sometimes wondered if you knew me better than I knew myself.”

After sharing some of her favorite memories with her beloved puppy, Reed shared her sincere appreciation, writing, “Thank you for my child, in this life, my Ira girl. Ill bring you back to our favorite lake.”

My sweet Ira girl. So many memories, so many adventures with you at my side. You’ve been my best friend for so long, and so I sit here and write this letter to you, I still don’t know if I’m able to say goodbye. You are the definition of unconditional love of my beautiful girl. You taught me so much about so many…in many ways our greatest teacher. You have here for each chapter, as my rock, my favorite cuddle buddy and my best girl. We have researched endless fields, mountains and planes. We traveled through the country together more than once, snuggled on the couches under one blanket, and jogged to the hot streets of Georgia endless sharing of water bottles and coast. We have slept in vans, lived in hotels, and jumped from the boats. Each chapter of my life feels like it wouldn’t have been as special without you and now I don’t know how to let you go. I miss that crazy toothy grin, and watching you stretch your head up to the sky after each nap. I miss those sensitive eyes, that looked so deep in my soul I sometimes wondered if you knew me better than I knew myself. You are the only dog I’ve ever known that would sing along to the radio, to let us know when it was time to switch because you found one that you liked. You showed me that sitting on my toes felt as sweet as a hand-in-hand, and you knew what I was thinking before I said it. I still can’t figure out how all of the 75 pounds you could curl up in a little ball at my feet. I think you’ll have to explain that trick to me in our next life together. We shared so many secrets, so many laughs, so many tears. You already know, you’ve seen it all. You brought a smile to us all in our saddest moments, touching the hearts wherever you went, and there is not one person who is not to say that you the magic of my little girl. Everyone you meet fall in love, everyone you met wanted more. Thank you for being my child in this life my Ira girl. Ill bring you back to our favorite soon to be more…

Quiet cancer had filled this great girl from me, and there was nothing we could do,” Somerhalder, 39, wrote. “I’ve never known a more magnificent animals. A soul, who spoke 1,000 languages. Boy, I will miss you and everyone who ever know you will miss.”

The “Vampire Diaries” alum shared some of his favorite memories of his time with Ira, including “Numerous flights, 100nights in the airstream, the drive across the country, jumping in any lake – river – stream, and the ocean was there just for a splash and be happy.”

Ira was one of the many pets Reed and Somerhalder share together, as the couple often foster animals in need of a home and looking for a final placement. The couple, who got married in 2015, share of a 10-month-old son, Bodhi Soleil.
