Nicki Minaj was slammed after she compared herself to Harriet Tubman.
Nicki Minaj was criticized Monday after she compared herself to Harriet Tubman for her performance during the Video Music Awards.
Minaj first sparked controversy after she mentioned the historical abolitionist in a tweet. The rapper is on a Twitter rampage since accusing Spotify of not properly promoting her album “Queen”, because it was released on Apple Music Beats 1 station “Queen of Radio” 10 minutes early.
“All the QUEENS I remember, SHOOK the S— TO!!!!!!!! Queen of the week can go to HARRIET TUBMAN!!!!!! She Had sat there and ate her rice, n—– history would be a lot less triumphantly,” tweeted Minaj just before 3:00 pm EST.
She doubled down on her stance when TMZ caught her leaving her hotel Monday night. When he was asked about her tweet, Minaj says, “I am the new Harriet Tubman.”
Many fans slammed the rapper for comparing herself to Tubman, who helped free slaves via the Underground Railroad before the civil war.
Nicki Minaj performed and won Best Hip Hop Award at the VMAs Monday night.
“Let Harriet Tubman! That is the way out of your league sis,” a user wrote.
Another person tweeted, “If you think your tweet is deep, but it is really shallow lol.”
“Nah Harriet Tubman was a true Queen, which inspired her people to do something if something you’re a scullery maid dumbing down of the masses. Don’t compare yourself to a real icon that actually stands for something,” another person said.
Many fans shared gifs, to show their disapproval of the equation.
Minaj tried to clarify her statement on Monday evening with a second tweet: “I have said what I said.”
“Y’all I had no idea Harriet Tubman was now trending. I said what I said,” Minaj wrote. “#QueenRadio will honor her tmrw. She [Tubman] said that they could have saved more slaves had they known they were slaves. I fought for streaming services to count towards billboard when alotta n—– kept it quiet.”
Minaj performed during Monday night’s VMA’s in New York City, the Oculus. She also won the award for “Best Hip Hop Award.”
This was not the first time in recent days that Minaj has her Twitter for a broadcast of personal grievances. As previously reported, the star was in a very public argument with her ex of 12 years, Safaree Samuels, after he claimed she assaulted him. Soon after, her attention focused on complaints about the album not performing well.
