New festival in bierdorp of Flanders, a tribute to craft beers

On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 of June, in the Westhoek, the very first Vleteren Craft Beer Festival (VCBF). Beer lovers from all over the world to announce their arrival.

Vleteren is not just described as ‘the bierdorp of Flanders’. This small West-Flemish municipality has up to three breweries: the legendary Sint Sixtus brewery in Westvleteren, the famous The Sturdy Brewers in Oostvleteren and the Deca Brewery in Woesten. Good for up to one brewery per borough and 1000 inhabitants.

With the Vleteren Beer Craft Festival the organisers want to draw attention to the exceptional qualities of real craft brewed beers. There will be more than 150 species of are present in Vleteren. Breweries from Belgium and the neighbouring countries the Netherlands, Germany, France and Great Britain confirmed already, but that also did some of the producers from Estonia, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia and even Argentina and the United States.

“The interest from both breweries as well as visitors for our first beer festival surpasses the wildest expectations”, according to Bjorn Baron, chairman of the organizing bierproeversvereniging ‘The Bear Pilgrims’. “Most guesthouses and B&bs are already booked up, but not just this we have also developed a 200-many free pitches on a meadow in the immediate vicinity of the festival site. To the festival-goers safely to their roosts are shuttle services inlaid.”

The entrance to the VCBF is free. However, there may be up to 2000 visitors at a time on the festival website. Therefore, it is advisable to advance via the website a festivalpakket to books. For 20 euro you get a ticket, a test panes are shot at, 10 drankjetons and a 64-page bierbijbel.
