NASA has a 3D map of the moon, with the aid of CGI, and the details and images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The CGI-Moon kit to make it possible for 3D artists to have easy access to the data, to the moon, and that they might not otherwise get to, and after receiving several requests, the organization stated.

“[The Moon in kit] of the LRO data are within the range of most of the other artists who will be doing all of the things that I do,” CGI-Moon’s kit, and a science visualizer from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Ernie Wright, said in a statement.

One of the primary functions of the LRO, which is the study of the Earth’s natural satellite over the last ten years, map its topography. This will aid NASA is preparing to return to the moon in 2024, as part of the Artemis program.

The LRO has an orbiter that will scan the surface of the moon, building the image one line at a time. It also includes a laser altimeter, which uses laser pulses to assist in the construction of the image of the moon.

Noah Petro, a LRO scientist at Goddard, said of Wright’s work, it is very important, even if people don’t realize is that he is helping them.

“He was able to help in the telling of the story, with the help of the LRO data, and to illustrate difficult-to-communicate ideas or concepts of what the story might be,” Petro said in a statement. “So, I guess he had some influence on the way in which people make use of the information, and if they don’t know.”

Wright likened the use of 3D animation software in the film is live-action, with the help of lights, cameras, props and backdrops, the addition of “visualization is more like the filming of a documentary. You will, in fact, it is the creation of a story.”

“We have to put the photos in context, Wright continued, “we have to bring them back to where they came from.”
