Mother who faked son’s cancer sentenced to probation

CINCINNATI – A woman who prosecutors say falsely claimed her young son had terminal cancer, as a doctor and fraudulently collected money for him has been sentenced to a period of probation.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Hamilton County judge told the 40-year-old Monika Burgett that they are “an important contribution” to the condemnation of her Wednesday to five years of probation. Burgett was convicted in August of felony child endangerment and telecommunications fraud.

The judge ordered a comprehensive treatment plan for Burgett. He also ordered her to pay back more than $26,000 to the GoFundMe fundraising site.

Burgett’s lawyer says the sentence will give her a chance to get her life back together.”

Testimony indicated Burgett the 5-year-old son has a genetic disorder that causes benign growths. He is currently living with the family in Texas.
