Mother angry about the custody fatally shoots daughter, 14, during an ambush against ex, police say

Prosecutors say that they believe that a Seattle-area woman charged in the death of her daughter harbored a grudge against her ex-husband, after he was granted custody of their children.

Authorities in Washington state level a lot of charges Friday against a woman accused of holding her ex-husband and son hostage and tie her teen daughter, ankles and hands for fatally shooting the girl between the eyes.

The suspect, identified as Svetlana Laurel, 52, faces life in prison without parole if convicted in the shooting death of the 14-year-old Natalie Gulizia, Seattle, Q13 FOX reported. Laurel faces costs increased in the first degree is murder in the first degree attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, according to the report.

Prosecutors say they believe Laurel harbored a grudge against her ex-husband after he was granted custody of their children and she was only allowed under the supervision of the visit, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.


“You have made my life miserable,” Laurel reportedly told her ex. “Now I’m going to make yours miserable. If you are of that chair I’ll blow your brains out.”

“It is clear that the defendant has a deep animus in the direction of her ex-husband and she has proven that they are capable of committing the most horrific acts against her own children,” writes John B. Castleton, senior vice-prosecutor who filed the charges in King County, according to the news outlet.

On Tuesday, Laurel went to her ex-husband’s home in Renton, while he and their daughter were a few miles away in Seattle. The 12-year-old son was in the house.

Laurel supposedly zip-tied, and the son, a sock in his mouth and threatened him with a stun gun. When the ex-husband returned home, Laurel tied him and beat him several times with a gun, authorities said.


The girl tried to call 911 and was a shot between its eyes, according to the officers of justice. Prior to the recording, the call receiver heard a sound similar to zip ties to be fastened, followed by a loud bang, authorities said.

Someone yelled about someone who is dead, according to reports.

Laurel tried the shooting of her ex-husband, but the gun jammed, police later determined.

The defendant was held in King County jail without bail.
