‘Morocco after 33 years a member of the African Union’

The African Union Morocco Monday after 33 years was admitted as a member. That happened after a debate about the status of the Western Sahara.

News agency AFP reports that on the basis of discussions conducted on a summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

“Morocco is a full member of the African Union. There was a very long debate on the decision in advance”, said the president of Senegal after the end against journalists.

About forty of the 54 countries affiliated to the African Union for the return of Morocco.

Western Sahara

Morocco got in 1984 from the African Union due to the membership of the Arab Democratic Republic of Sahara (ADRS). The ADRS and Morocco claim to both the Western Sahara.

The conflict around the Western Sahara plays since 1975. The former Spanish colony is the Moroccan area, according to the government in Rabat, but not every country recognises that.

Many members of the African Union, to recognize the Western Sahara as a sovereign country.
