Willie Geist said he was shocked that the former “Today” show host was fired due to sexual misconduct.
Willie Geist of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and NBC’s “Sunday Today”, said the abrupt firing of his former colleague Matt Lauer, because of sexual misconduct was “a shock for everyone.”
Geist, 42, told Northjersey.com he was still in shock over the bomb sexual misconduct allegations against Lauer.

“I was shocked]. I think it’s a shock for everyone,” Geist said. “I don’t know how you could not be surprised. I started to fill in for Matt in 2010. I was not close to him outside of work, but I found him a good friend and mentor. Sure, he was someone who I looked up to. He was the man who was considered to be the best on that job, when the host of a morning show. So, yes, I think we were all surprised and I think we are all still a bit shocked by it.”

The New Jersey native dismissed rumors that he would Lauer the coveted spot on the “Today” show. He called the rumors a “fun parlor game.”

“I’m just going to be totally honest with you: I love ‘Morning Joe.’ I’m on the show, that is the place to go in the morning for the hottest story in the world, Donald Trump,” Geist said. “And I have a show on the Sunday — a ‘Today’ show with my name on it — where I get to write and control the content and interviewing people I find interesting. I really really love these two jobs.”
Lauer, 59, was fired by NBC News in November for ‘ inappropriate sexual behavior.” The former “Today” show host allegedly had an affair with a production assistant. Several published an expose on Lauer’s inappropriate conduct and reported the tv personality had a secret button in his office that locked his door without him having to get up.
NBC has not named a replacement for Lauer.
