More victims with burns seek help in centres
A growing number of victims with burns that a clinical treatment must undergo, go to specialized burn centers.
Between 1995 and 2011 there were 9031 patients who were included in one of the three burn centers in the Netherlands (Beverwijk, Rotterdam and Groningen). In 1995, visited 430 patients a center, in 2011, were looking for 747 people specialised help.
This is evident from the dissertation of Jan Doctor, brandwondenarts and medical coordinator of the burn unit in the Maasstad Hospital in Rotterdam.
From the figures that Doctor in a row has been shown that about half of the victims to a specialized burn unit, while in the eighties and nineties, about a third was.
“One of the reasons for this change is the fact that burn centers today, in a still earlier stage are consulted by regular hospitals,” says Doctor.
“Patients with serious burns go almost always to the nearest hospital for first care. I notice that the doctors from that hospitals are now much more inclined to their specialized colleagues of the burn centers to consult about the further treatment. Regularly, they decide together that it is better to be the victim for follow-up to move to a burn unit.”
He let us know that also the introduction of new protocols probably has played a role in the influx. In 1998 in the Netherlands was the course on ’emergency care for burns is introduced. The popularity of the course increased, especially in 2001, after the new year fire in Volendam.
According to Doctor the figures show that the collaboration between regular hospitals and burn centers getting better and that doctors other better know how to find it.
