The seized drugs have a street value estimated at $1 billion, and the crew has been arrested and charged.

More than 16.5 tons of cocaine seized from a ship in a Philadelphia port on Tuesday, in what some officials are saying that it was one of the nation’s largest drug busts.

The billion-dollar-bust, in which several members of the crew were arrested, took place on board the MSC Gayane, a cargo ship that originated in Chile, and traveled to Panama and the Bahamas, the link is at the Packer Marine Terminal in Philidelphia, a high-ranking official in the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) told CBS News.

“This is one of the largest drug seizures in the United States of america and the world, the united states Attorney, William McSwain, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, tweeted on Tuesday. “This amount of cocaine, it could kill millions of millions and MILLIONS of people. My Office will do everything possible to make our borders secure, and the streets are safe and deadly drugs.”

The Mediterranean Shipping Co., please reply to the drug raid by saying that it was “aware of reports of the incident at the Port of Philadelphia in which US authorities had a seizure of illicit cargo. The MSC is taking this matter very seriously and is grateful to the authorities for the purpose of identifying a suspicion of improper use of the services.”


The company has insisted that it is “committed to working with governments and industry groups worldwide to improve the safety and security of the international supply chain, and to ensure that illegal practices will be dealt with promptly and thoroughly by the proper authorities.”

Several of the other cocaine, the failures and in the course of the past few months, included $38 million of the drug to be sniffed by the drug dogs in Philidelphia back in March, which resulted in 1,185 pounds of cocaine seized by the authorities. But in Tuesday’s bust, made up that term.


One of the big drug raid that went down back in February, when customs agents seized 3,200 kg of cocaine in the Port of New York and New Jersey, with a total of approximately $77 million — the largest bust in the port area since 1994.
