Gov., Eric Greitens resigns amid sexual misconduct scandal

Missouri Republican Governor, announces once considered a GOP rising star, his resignation in the midst of an impeachment effort initiated by a couple of scandals; Matt Finn reports.

Eric Greitens, the fighting Republicans of Missouri Governor before a sexual misconduct, scandals and allegations of abuse of a charity donor list, said on Tuesday that he would resign this week.

Greitens, said during a press conference that “the last months have been incredibly difficult.”

“This torture is designed to cause an incredible amount of stress for my family. Millions of dollars from mounting legal bills, endless personal attacks designed to cause maximum damage to family and friends,” said Greitens. “Legal harassment of colleagues, friends and campaign workers, and it is clear that for the forces that are against us, there is no end in sight.”

He continued, “I can not allow these forces to continue to be pain and trouble to the people I love.”

Greitens added that he was “perfect”, but insisted he had not “broken the law or committed any offense deserving of this treatment.”

“I’ll leave the fairness of this procedure will be evaluated by the history,” he said.

Greitens had previously said he would not his post stop, despite the allegations against him. He stood in front of a possible impeachment.

The 44-year-old legislator, a former Navy SEAL, was accused of the removal and transfer of non-consensual, sometimes naked — photo of a woman with whom he’s having an affair.

A felony invasion of privacy charges brought against him by the state has been dropped, but the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office said that it still planned to be the case, either by an special Prosecutor or by a representative helper.

Also, The Mission will Continue investigating a veterans charity founded by Greitens, as it relates to the state of consumer protection charitable registration and reporting laws. The probe came after media reports suggested, based on revision history campaign had received, and with a charity-donor list in the year 2015, as it ramped up fundraising for his gubernatorial bid.

In April, Greitens was charged with a crime, tampering with computer data, for the alleged disclosure of the charity donor list to its political fundraiser in 2015 without permission.

St. Louis Circuit attorney Kim Gardner said Tuesday her office has reached a “fair and equitable solution” to criminal charges against Greitens, now that he his resignation. Further details will be released on Wednesday, she said.

Greitens is likely to be replaced by Missouri Lieutenant Gov. Mike Parson.

Pastor was elected as the state’s 47th governor, a lieutenant in November 2016, and before the Senate and house of representatives, served in the state.

Greitens said it was “a great honour and a privilege,” the governor and he’ll always be a fighter for the people of Missouri.”

“The time has come, however, tend to be those who have been wounded, and to ensure that those who need us most,” he said.

Greitens took office in January of 2017, defeated Democrat and former state attorney General Chris Koster.
