The boys did nothing to me.’
I grew up with a female version of myself. By my twin sister to study, look at how she dressed and how she behaved, I became fascinated by women’s fashion.
Erdem his love for fashion is thanks to his sister: “I grew up with a female version of myself. By my twin sister to study, look at how she dressed and how she behaved, I became fascinated by women’s fashion. I’m not sexually attracted to women, but I am obsessed by their looks.”
As a child, swallowed up by Erdem with all the news about fashion: “I saw the work of Yves Saint Laurent or Chanel, and I understood that there was a world that was very far away from where I lived, in the suburbs of Montreal. I understood that there is a world where people clothing made. And I knew from a very early age that the world was where I was part of wanted to make.’
Bold and unusual combinations
Erdem studied fashion in Canada and England in 2003 and earned his master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in London. After his studies he worked in New York, together with Diane Von Furstenberg. In 2005, he eventually his own label in London. In a short time he became a well-known name: his mix of bold and unusual colour combinations, lush cut, complex digital floral prints and a touch of embroidery fell into the taste.
Erdem is loved by stars like Marion Cotillard, Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and Sarah Jessica Parker. Also, the British Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is a big fan of his work.

Fashion as storytelling
Erdem believes in the power of beauty, the exploration of historical references and personal stories in each piece that he creates. His approach always starts with a story: “It’s always about a woman, who she is and what happened to her. I want her as a living character on my catwalk to perform. The Erdem woman is someone who is in my head and in my sketchbooks. It is very interesting when you get to New York and you see someone your dress wear. Perhaps it is a doctor, or a woman, or a eighties. She is so many different people. But it still exists.’
The Erdem woman is someone who is in my head and in my sketchbooks. But it remains great to have her on the street in my dresses.

The leading filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, known for the flamboyant Moulin Rouge! and recently, the bombastic Netflixreeks The Get Down , brings the collection to life with his unique way of storytelling. ‘For me fashion is always about more than just clothing, it is a form of expression – a single art form”, let the director know. ‘Luhrmann is one of the most important storytellers of our time,” said a delighted Erdem.
