‘Measures EU in fight against food wastage, too little co-ordinated’
The measures of the European Union to food waste are fragmented and irregular, the European Court of auditors, in a Tuesday report published.
The problem is now on the plate of the member is slid, while the European Commission’s policy much better would have to coordinate, the report read.
The recent establishment of a European platform against food waste is, according to the auditors no solution.
Globally, an estimated one third of people referred to food, with enormous economic and environmental costs. One of the reasons that this is not wraps, is that there is no common definition of food waste.
The EU countries, the European Parliament and the G20 have repeatedly called for a stronger role for Brussels. Many previous recommendations are, however, ignored or only partially implemented.
“What we need now, is a better alignment of existing policies, a better coordination and a clear policy objective of food waste reduction”, says rekenkamerlid Bettina Jakobsen.
She proposes the following legal and other obstacles for voedselschenkingen to take away. The emphasis, however, should lie on the prevention of waste, not only at supermarkets and the industry, but also in agriculture and fisheries.
