McClaren goes trainer Cruyff to help Maccabi Tel Aviv
Steve McClaren is going to the technical staff of Maccabi Tel Aviv strengthen. The former coach of FC Twente, adviser for the team of trainer Jordi Cruyff.
“It is good to be back with Jordi to work together,” says the 56-year-old McClaren Monday on the site of Maccabi Tel Aviv. “I know him since the time that we worked together at Manchester United were right and have the last years always kept in contact.”
Cruyff was between 1999 and 2001 player of United, while McClaren as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson. “I want Jordi and help players to have success this season,” says the Englishman.
The 43-year-old Cruyff is working on his first season as coach of Maccabi, after he the last five years, been technical director at the football club from Israel.
McClaren was in march for the second time in two years, fired by Championship club Derby County. In 2010, he led FC Twente to the only national championship in the history of the Tukkers.
McClaren was also the national coach of England and manager of Middlesbrough, the German VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
Maccabi Tel Aviv finished last season behind Hapoel Beer Sheva in the Ligat Ha’Al, the top division in Israel.
The team of Cruyff lost Sunday, his first league game of the season at home with 0-3 of Beitar Jerusalem.
The club from Tel Aviv survived all three rounds of the Europa League. Thursday plays Maccabi at home return in the play-offs of the second European clubtoernooi against Rheindorf Altach, after the heenwedstrijd in Austria with 0-1 was won.
