Mattis: North Korea short of posing imminent missile threat

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis says North Korea’s most recent test of a long-range missile does not testify to an imminent threat to the United States.

Shortly after the late-November test, Mattis said the rocket flew higher than any previous North Korean test, and that it was to be a continuous effort to build a rocket is a threat to the US.

In an interview with reporters at the Pentagon on Friday, Mattis was asked whether the missile test pointed to an imminent threat of a nuclear attack on the US.

Mattis’ response was: “No, not yet.” He said U.S. experts are still occupied with what he called “forensic analysis.” This probably refers to the studies of the images of the rocket during the flight and the re-entry of the mock warhead in the atmosphere of the Earth.
