Marijuana for Christmas, and a lot of it, allegedly in the elderly couple’s truck

The plans for a “weed Christmas” went wrong on Tuesday after the authorities in Nebraska found an elderly couple with 60 pounds of marijuana in their truck as they drove across the country, NPR reported.

Patrick Jiron, 80, and his wife, Barbara, 83, driving from California to Boston, Mass. and Vermont when they were pulled over Tuesday by the sheriff deputies in York County, the outlet said, referring to the News York Times.

Authorities reportedly saw the Toyota Tacoma driver does not signal and saw the truck drift across the center line of the road. When she pulled the car, deputies smelled a pungent odor of marijuana, NPR said.

When you are prompted, Patrick allegedly admitted that the drugs were in the truck and allowed deputies to perform a search.

“She said that the marijuana was for christmas presents,” the Lt. Paul Vrbka of the York County Sheriff’s Department told the News York Times.

Under the pick-up topper in the back of the truck, deputies discovered 60 pounds of marijuana and several containers of concentrated THC, NPR reported. Authorities reportedly an estimate of the weed at a value of more than $300,000.

Patrick Jiron, 80, was booked into York County Jail.

The pair were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp, which is required by Nebraska state law, NPR said. Patrick Jiron was placed in York County Jail, but his wife Barbara was not due to a medical problem, USA Today reported.
