Kurtz: survey respondents ‘ mainstream media: Drop dead

‘MediaBuzz’ host Howard Kurtz weighs in on the Ipsos poll claims that 43 percent of Republicans want President Trump to shut down some media.

Okay, I get it. Much of America hates us.

By “us” I mean that hydra-headed beast known as the media, and the deep-seated lack of trust has charged built for decades and has a turbo, during the Trump era.

And I’m the first to say that many of these wounds are self-inflicted, the product of many years of bias, sensationalism, superficiality, elitism, errors, and misjudgments. I’ve documented a good part of my career to all of this and much more.

I understand only too well that President Trump has whipped up a fervor against the press, with its constant attacks on “fake news”, and that the MSM, the predominantly negative coverage of POTUS has cost you a whole lot of credibility with his followers.

But for all that, I was not ready for this Ipsos survey.

Not less than 26 percent of Americans say they agree that “the President should have the power to close the news agencies engaged in bad behavior.”

To close you. Put you out of business. Just like in a totalitarian society.

How much do you have to be despised, to believe the media, that a President should have dictatorial power to the dissolution of a company?

Fifty-three percent did not agree, and here is the party political breakdown:

About 43 percent of Republicans say, Yes, let the President shut down the operation of the media, he does not like.

And 12 percent of Democrats agree, along with 21 percent of the self-employed.

This is a theoretical exercise. The First amendment protects even the worst media offender from the interference of the government (if not prohibited from Facebook and Twitter). In fact, there are laws that would prevent a President from shutting down all the private companies of the fiat.

But I think many of the surveyed voters, based on disgust.

I would ask that 43 percent of the Republicans: How would you feel if Barack Obama was President on and off, wanted to the media that he didn’t like? You wouldn’t scream bloody murder?

So this is just their way of affirming that you disappear the love Trump, despise the media and would like to only some of these outlets to be?

And, uh, what is happen in the conservative passion for the free market?

A caveat about the survey: The Ipsos methodology, the inclusion of online-panels, and the statistical adjustments, is not as reliable as a random telephone survey. But even if the numbers are a little off, you are even more alarming.

The survey also included other questions. “News and reporters are necessary to the trump administration honestly”: to agree to 57 percent.

Most of the news agencies have a liberal bias: 48%.

The mainstream media, President Trump, Unger handle genuine: 43 percent agree.

The media are the enemy of the American population: 23 percent of the vote.

There is a huge partisan gap on such questions. For example, 79 percent of Republicans, 41 percent of independents and 11 percent of Democrats say the media is treating Trump’s unfair.

The pro-shutdown group shrinks when the question of concrete.

A total of 13 percent say Trump shut down mainstream news media such as CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post. This is 23 percent of the GOPers, 10 per cent of the indies, and 8 percent of Dems.

An appropriate response on the part of the journalists would be in a little self-reflection on these figures. The more likely reaction is to dismiss those who challenge their right to exist as “ignorant” bozos.
