Man indicted for murder charges 10 days after his death

NEW ORLEANS – A lawyer says New Orleans prosecutors secured a murder indictment against the man that is on the evening of his funeral, 10 days after he died in his sleep.

John Fuller, who previously worked as a lawyer for the late Steven “Shaq” Burns Jr. told various media that his client’s indictment Thursday by an Orleans Parish grand jury, was a disturbing insult to the man, the grieving family members.

A spokesman for the district attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office said that prosecutors were unaware of Burns’ March 20, died before the indictment. The spokesman says that the case against Burns will be removed as soon as his death is confirmed.

The accusation was brought with Burns of second degree murder and conspiracy in the September 2011 killing of a man who works as an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration.
