‘Mall brawl’ involving hundreds of young people yields 4 arrests: 3 adults and 1 teenager, police say

A massive mall brawl in Connecticut on Wednesday — in which hundreds of people, according to the reports — resulted in the arrest of three adults and a teenager, police said.

The police responded to a call around 6 hours a brawl that had broken out in the Buckland Hills Mall in Manchester, Conn., Hartford’s FOX 61 reported. There were allegedly multiple disorders at the same time, in the mall, a total of up to 300 people. The police said most of those involved in the fighting were teenagers.

Three adults at the age of 18, 18 and 19, and a minor of the age of 17 years, were arrested at the mall and charged with breach of peace, interfering with the officers, and inciting a rebellion. The adults were the 19-year-old Dynastee McCoy of Wethersfield, 18-year-old Inaija Williams from Hartford, and 18-year-old Naejza Devoid of New Britain, police said.

The police said that the 17-year-old refused to leave after the riots had broken, and was given an additional charge of criminal trespassing. The teenager was also carrying a .22-caliber pistol without a permit, for which he was charged, police said.

The first battle initiated additional fights inside and outside the mall, police said. Additional agents were called in to help break the fights, while the groups classified in one of the surrounding parking lots. None of the involved officers was injured, and the situation was under control at 7 p.m., the Hartford Courant reported.

The mall was closed for the rest of the day for the reopening of Thursday. Mall management said no one was injured and “the safety of our guests, retailers, and community is our highest priority.”

Coincidentally, another brawl broke out at the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford, about 50 km away. Police do not believe the two incidents were related.

Property managers are now weighing whether to prohibit unsupervised juveniles of the shopping centre after Wednesday’s melee. Manchester police Lt. Ryan Shea said that extra police officers will be stationed at the mall for the foreseeable future. Authorities are reportedly working to determine what the initiative for the battle.

The three adults who were arrested appeared before the court Thursday and is expected to appear in court next month, the Hartford Courant reported.

Manchester is located about 10 miles east of Hartford.
