ROCKPORT, Maine – The growing market for lobster in China continues to grow, with the country set a new record for the value of the import of the seafood from the United States.
The american lobster is almost unheard of in China until 2010, when the value of imports increased by 250 percent to approximately $7.4 million. Last year, China imported more than $108 million in the crayfish from the Americas, surpassing the previous high of $90.2 million in 2014.
Chinese importers took in more than 14 million pounds of lobster last year, which was also a record. The previous high was approximately 13.1 million pounds in 2015.
The increase came in a record year for the lobster catch in Maine. Atlantic Canada also has a lobster fishery, and sends the same type to China.
