Liberal groups call for the senators, who has recused the contributions of President-elect, Donald Trump’s education Secretary pick to recuse himself from the vote on your confirmation – drawing accusations of hypocrisy from Republicans, who note that Democrats never themselves in similar situations.
In a letter of 21 Republican senators, the nominee Betsy DeVos has given almost $1 million in campaign donations, Generation of progress and other left-wing groups called for you to recuse yourself “or risk jeopardising the legitimacy of DeVos” confirmation.”
DeVos, a strong advocate for school choice, has planned her Senate hearing for Tuesday.
“In addition to this individual campaign contributions, DeVos and her family $contributed 2.25 million, the Fund during the fall campaign, the Senate leadership, and also have $ 900,000 to the National Republican Senate Committee. That comes out to $4 million bid to influence them,” the letter says. Generation progress is an arm of the Center for American Progress.
But the Republicans are pushing back, arguing that the former Obama Cabinet-donated had picks to Democratic politicians and causes, and Democrats cast votes for confirmation anyway.
Penny Pritzker, Obama’s now-Commerce Secretary, was a bundler for Obama in 2012, the donations re-election bid, collecting more than $1 million in campaign. The Wall Street Journal also reported she raised more than $250,000 € for him in 2008 when she was finance chair for his campaign.
Pritzker had also donated approximately $20,000 to at least 20 of the 51 Democrats who voted on their confirmation on June 25, 2013. In 2009, she also has a $28,340 donation to the democratic senatorial campaign Committee, according to Open secrets.
Sally Jewell, Obama is now interior Minister, had also donated to a number of Democratic senators that are tailored to your 2013-confirmation, including $4,250 to Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. – who has your nomination.
Republicans denounced what they saw as a “shameless” double-standard.
“The hypocrisy of the Democrats and their liberal allies, is really shameless. Where was your outrage when Democrats voted for Obama to be the Cabinet nominees who have donated, and your campaigns?” Raj Shah, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said FoxNews.com.
While the amounts donated by Pritzker and Jewell are not on the same numbers as DeVos’ donation, their followers and the situations describe are so similar.
“If you accept the faulty premise that political contributions are a conflict of interest, then any amount is problematic,” said Ed Patru, spokesman for friends of Betsy DeVos, of The Washington Post. “I can’t remember a single Democrat, recusing citing conflicts of interest, a vote on billionaires like Penny Pritzker.”
