‘Le Fidèle’, the third feature film by Michaël R. Roskam, the Belgian entry for the Oscarcategorie Foreign Language (Non-English language Films). That has the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) Friday announced.
The film focuses on the Mostra, the film festival of Venice, in world premiere and out of competition films. After a display on the almost equally renowned festival of Toronto, where the film is being played under the English title ‘Racer and the jailbird,” says the Belgian premiere on October 4.
For Roskam is already the second time that he’s Oscar hope: the debuutlangspeelfilm ‘Rundskop’ was, in 2012, selected. ‘Rundskop’ pulled out when the shortlist, but was ultimately beaten by the Iranian ‘A Separation.’ Between the two films he made with ‘The Drop’ first Hollywoodprent.
‘Le Fidèle’ is a romantic neo-noir, where Roskam are a regular customer Matthias Schoenaerts as Gigi together with the French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos (La Vie d’Adèle’) as Bibi in a dark love tragedy against the backdrop of the infamous Brussels gangstermilieu. Already in his first two films had Roskam demonstrated a special predilection for the noir genre.
In addition Schoenaerts and Exarchopoulos, there are supporting roles for, among others, Sam Louwyck and Stefaan Degand. Roskam wrote the screenplay with Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré. Nicolas Karakatsanis was again behind the camera, after he previously also worked on ‘Bullhead’ and ‘The Drop’. Alain Dessauvage provided for the assembly, Raf Keunen signed for the original muziekscore.
‘Glorious news’, responded Schoenaerts. ‘I feel like a little child.’ Also joy in the director: ‘This I only can hope,” said Roskam.
In order to know whether ‘Le Fidèle’ to the shortlist of nine films, is still a few months wait. Then have the patience to be raised to know whether the film is also the final selection of five films – out. We know that on January 23. The award ceremony of the 90th Oscars takes place on Sunday 4 march, as always in Hollywood.
