CHICAGO – Advocates for clergy abuse victims say their list of 395 priests, or lay people in Illinois who publicly accused of the sexual abuse of children is much more than the names have been released by the state’s six dioceses.
Attorneys Jeff Anderson and Marc Pearlman say that the differences shows the leaders of the church continue to hide the extent of the clergy abuse crisis.
They say that of the 395 names on the list released Wednesday, only one is a priest still in active ministry.
Dioceses across the country say they have taken important steps to address clergy abuse, including the publishing of the names of all credibly accused members of the clergy and the reporting of any complaint they receive to the police. The new list pulls names from court cases, news articles and other public sources.
