LOS ANGELES – The lawyer of a Mexican immigrant is detained by immigration agents in California while driving his wife to a hospital to give birth, says the man may have been mistaken by the agents for his brother.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Joel Arrona Lara was wanted on a warrant in a murder case in Mexico.
He was last week during the stop for gas.
His wife, Maria del Carmen Venegas, and had to drive himself to a scheduled caesarean section.
Arrona lawyer Emilio Amaya Garcia told KCBS-TV on Sunday, he is not aware of any warranty and has not been able to confirm it with the Mexican consulate.
Garcia says authorities would not have as Arrona for his brother, who has done prison in Mexico.
A telephone message to the consulate was not returned.
