Last train to pilgrimage site Lourdes left

In Maastricht the last bedevaartstrein to Lourdes departed. This brings an end to a more than 95-year-old catholic tradition.

The last train returns on 18 september.

The two large bedevaartorganisaties in the Netherlands now only use bus or plane. Train hiring is substantially more expensive than a trip by plane or bus organizing, told a spokesman of the House for the Pilgrim in Maastricht already.

In september, traveling a total of more than 1600 pilgrims, with both organisations from the Netherlands to Lourdes. Many sick catholics hope to be there on the intercession of the holy virgin Mary is healthy to be or, in each case relief from their pain to beg. Means of transportation

The train is leased from a Belgian charter company. Who rides in the winter, often to ski resorts. A train journey from Maastricht to Lourdes will take at least 14 hours.
