Kromowidjojo prolongeert world title in 50 free at world CHAMPIONSHIPS short-course

Ranomi Kromowidjojo on the final day of the world cup short-course in Canada her world title in the 50 meter free stroke prolonged.

The 26-year-old from Groningen in the night from Sunday to Monday, just like two years ago in Doha, the fastest in the sprint in the 25-metre lap pool. ‘Kromo’ tapped as first in 23,60 seconds.

The kopvrouw of the Dutch team in Canada has brought its total number of medals in Windsor to five. Previously picked up Kromowidjojo individual silver in the 100 free, with the estafetteteams she had success on the 4×50 free (silver in the mixed team and the women) and on the 4×100 free (bronze).

Kromowidjojo made her status as topfavoriete Sunday night entirely true. In the semi-finals she had 23,67 already by far the best time clocked. They remained in the finals, however, far removed from her own world record at 23,24.

At a suitable distance ended the Italian Silvia Di Pietro as the second (23,90). The bronze went to the American Madison Kennedy (23,93). The Danish Jeanette Ottesen, who was seen as the main threat for Kromowidjojo, fell with 24,00 just next to the podium (fourth).

Earlier in the evening, there was a medal for the Dutch estafettezwemsters, where Kromowidjojo was part. They took silver in the 4×50 free.

The quartet that also consisted of Tamara van Vliet, Maaike de Waard and Kim Busch had the race to host country, Canada, that gold captured in 1.35,00. Orange finished second in 1.35,37.

Two years ago, picked up the Dutch team at the world CHAMPIONSHIPS in Doha, the gold in the 4×50 free in a world record of 1.34,24. When had Kromowidjojo in the quartet company of Inge Dekker, Femke Heemskerk and Maud van der meer.

Final battle

With Of of More in place of ‘Kromo’ had the estafetteploeg as second placed for the final of the 4×50 free, behind Denmark. In the final battle was Orange after the first two laps in fourth place, but thanks to Kromowidjojo – 23,11 the best split time let note – yanked the Netherlands to the second spot behind Italy.

The Worth saw Canada in the past, but the 18-year-old slotzwemster Busch managed during the last 50 meters in the Italian standout Federica Pellegrini to pass. Italy, however, continued to the United States and Denmark in the battle for bronze.

Penny Oleksiak gave the host country the gold medal. Sixteen-year-old olympic champion in the 100 free made the chore as slotzwemster.
